Basic Skills
To change your home page – in Internet Explorer, click Tools>Internet Options. Type the URL of the web page you want to use. Click Apply. Click OK.
To minimize – click the small – sign in the top right of your window.
To maximize – click the small square in the top right of your window.
To drag a window – click the blue bar at the top and hold your mouse button down and move it.
To copy an email to someone else – use CC
To blind copy an email (so the address doesn't show up) – use BC
Email attachments – click on "attach" or the symbol for an attachment, browse to find the file, and attach it.
Open attachments – Either click on the attachment or the symbol (often a paper clip) and download it to your computer. Make sure you only open attachments from people you know!
Ctrl-alt-delete – press and hold these three keys at the same time to get a pop up box. Then you can "End task" on an application that is stalled.
To change wallpaper – right click on any picture you like and choose "set as background"
Screen resolution and desktop display settings – Open "My Computer" and click on "control panel". Choose "Appearance and Themes" and "Display". Click on the tabs at the top of the box and change the options you want to change. Be sure to watch the preview box to see how it will look. Click Apply and OK.
Right click – brings up varying menu options. Handy for copying and pasting and for opening links in new windows.
Making icons on the desktop – Click Start<Programs and then right-click on the program you need an icon for. Choose "Send to" and "Desktop". Then click on your desktop and the new icon should show up there.
When toolbars disappear – click View<Toolbars and select the toolbar you need.
Date and time – Double click on the clock in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Make sure the time zone is GMT-5:00 (for EST). If necessary, type in the correct time on the clock portion of the box.
Changing the toolbar and locking the toolbar – In Internet Explorer, click View<Toolbars<Customize. You can remove items from or add items to the toolbar. Then apply the changes. To lock the toolbar so students can't make changes, simply click View<Toolbars<Lock the toolbar. To unlock, View<Toolbars, and uncheck "lock the toolbar".
If students move your toolbars, just drag them back to where you want them to be.
