Questions from Mr. Shelton's
and Mrs. Spearman's
Second Grade Students

> Is your suit fire proof? Jordan
Yes, it is a nomex fire retardant hazard suit.  While not completely fire proof, it offers us more than enough protection for normal circumstances.

> How big is your fire truck? Jarquez
The truck I normally ride on is a Pierce Pumper.  It is 21ft. long and holds 1500 gallons of water.

> How do you put out so many fires?  Ish
Well, a lot of work.  It takes teamwork and cooperation from many people to put out a fire.

> How does it feel to be a firefighter? Vanessa and Kaleb
It feels pretty good, knowing you get to help others and change lives can be pretty cool :)

> What kind of suits do you wear?  Rochelle
I wear a normal firefighting protection suit.  My unit also has a hazardous response team, and they wear 15 different outfits, depending on the emergency.

> How many people ride on the fire truck at once?  John
My pumper seats 8 people, the driver, myself, and 6 firefighters in the back.  The ladder truck seats 10, and rescue squads seat 4.

> Do you wear boots?  Tommy
Yes, the boots come up to just below my knees.

> Do you have a dog in your firehouse?  Dillion
We used to have 2 dogs, but now they live with the fire chief.

> Do firefighters ever sleep?  Kristen
Yep, we have beds in a room of the fire station, and bedtime for us is 10pm.

> Are there beds in the firehouse to sleep in?  Christy
Yep, my fire station has 21 beds.

> I want to be a firefighter.  Kyle
There are explorer programs in some areas of the country that allow people who are 12 and older to work with the fire fighters and learn what it takes to be one.  Call the Boy Scouts of America for more info.

> Why do you wear those big suits?  Zanita
To keep us safe while we are working.  Without them, we would be facing temperatures that would kill normal people (2000+ degrees).

> How do you drive those big red fire trucks?  Kevin
We all are trained to drive the fire trucks, but we have a designated driver that has gone through special classes to know how to handle such a big truck.

> How many fires have you put out?  Halli
My fire district responds to an average of 33 fires a week, 80-100 car accidents, and 140 medical emergencies.

> How many fire trucks do you have at your fire house?  Christon
2 pumpers, one ladder truck, one rescue squad, one grassfire truck.

> I like the fire truck.  I like the yellow ones best.  What color is yours?
Ours are all red now, but about 5 years ago we had lime green fire trucks. The red ones are easier to see for most people, and that is why we changed.

> How heavy are the hoses you use?  Charles
Each 50 foot section weighs about 22lbs.

> Y'all be careful when you put out a fire.  Jose
We will be :)

> What color are your suits?  Whitney
Mine is red for a command officer.  The firefighters wear black suits, and the ladder (rescue) company's wear a tan color suit.

> How heavy are your suits?  Michael
When we have all of our equipment on, including the air tank, we have about 60 pounds of equipment on.

> How do you get out of a house if it's on fire so you can be safe?  Darrel
Your teacher can show you the best way to stay safe in a fire, or a visit to the local fire department.

> I like how you keep us safe from fire.  JD
We try to keep people safe, but it is up to you and your parents to keep a fire from happening.

> Is it hard to put out a fire?  Cameron
Yes, it takes many people several hours to put out a fire.  We had a house fire last night, and with 19 of my men there, it took us almost 9 hours to make sure the fire was out and everything was safe.
