Math Skills
Below are a list of skills and your child
will continue to work on and maintain throughout his or her 5th grade year.
Please help reinforce these skills so that your child will continue to
be successful in math throughout the school year.

5th Grade Math Terms, Symbols, &
Definitions:
For the 1st and 2nd 9 weeks please have
your children review the following terms: (I will create a new list for
the 3rd and 4th 9 weeks)
Sum - the answer in an addition
problem.
Difference - the answer in a subtraction.
Product - the answer in a multiplication
problem.
Quotient - the answer in a division
problem.
Mixed number - a number written
as a whole number and a fraction. Example - 2 ½ is a mixed number.
Proper fraction
- a fraction with a smaller numerator than denominator. For example, 3/5
is a proper fraction
Improper fraction
- is a fraction that has a numerator larger than or equal to its denominator.
For example 5/3 is an improper fraction.
Coordinate system - A system for
specifying points using coordinates.
Ordered pair - a pair of numbers
that give the location of a point on a map or a graph
Variable - When a letter is used
to represent a number or numbers in a math equation.
Line graph - a graph used to show
change over a period of time
Pictograph - a graph that shows
information by using pictures
