A magnet is an object that attracts certain things, usually iron or steel. A long time ago, Greek and Chinese people discovered a rock called magnetite. They found that this rock could pull little pieces of iron. This type of rock is a magnet, and this is where we get the word “magnet”.

Everything on earth is made up of tiny bits called atoms. When the atoms line up in organized rows, this causes magnetism.

We made this web site to help you learn more about magnets. Click on parts of the magnet below (or on the magnets at the top of the page) to learn more!

One word of caution:  Be sure you never get a magnet around a computer or other electronic device like an MP3 player. It will interfere with it and could cause it to stop working.
