FAQ
Accelerated
Reader
What is AR?
Accelerated Reader is a computerized program
that helps your child become a better reader. Children are given
time to practice reading in class, reading on their own level, and then
given time to take tests on the computer. This program is based on
the principle that practicing reading will make their reading skills grow.
Will AR affect my
child’s reading grade?
No, Accelerated Reader test grades are not
averaged into their reading grades.
Are all grade levels
doing AR?
Yes, every grade level will be doing it
for 50 minutes unless they are going to a special class. Kindergarten will
start the second six weeks.
How does AR work?
A child will read a book that is in their
independent reading zone and then take a test on the computer. If
your child is not an independent reader, then a parent or teacher will
have to read the book to them and read the test also.
How often can my
child take a test?
Your child can take a test as soon as they
finish the book. It is recommended that a child take the test within
48 hours of finishing the book.
Is it okay for me
to come to school and help my child on AR?
We would like for you to come and volunteer
in the classroom, but not for just your child. It would be better
if you worked with a group of children during the AR time and helped all
the children.
Can I come after
school and let my child take an AR test in the Media Center?
No, you will not be able to take tests after
school, but you will be able to check out books before or after school
and let your child read them at home. A parent can check out several
books at once.
Is it okay for me
to read the book to my child?
If your child cannot read yet, you should
be reading everything to your child. If your child can read, then
you should be reading books to them that are 1-2 years above their grade
level. They should be reading their books to you or by themselves.
The child will become a better reader if they are the ones who are reading.
What if he or she
fails a test, can they redo the test?
No, a child cannot redo the test this year.
A test will be deleted only if they got in the wrong test and they tell
the teacher immediately.
How do they earn
points for reading?
Your child earns points by the score on
their AR tests. The program will be rewarding children for those
that are motivated to do well on the tests. These rewards should
not be the ultimate goal for a student. The ultimate goal is to become
better readers because they have practiced reading. Being a better
reader opens the mind to many opportunities and discoveries about our world.
