The school has been the recipient of a $189,000 School Improvement Grant written to provide technology, improved instructional practices, and personnel to help meet the needs of Wacona's present student population and to meet the needs of those students who will attend Wacona in years to come.  The school uses the Accelerated Reader program which tests students on books read and awards points for correctly answered questions.  One teacher at Wacona has received Model Classroom status for Accelerated Reader.

Though academics are the major focus of school life, Wacona School participates greatly in the school system's Character Education program. Beautification of the Wacona campus both inside and outside involves teachers, students, and parents.  The designation of a student recognition area and a Character Clubhouse have been created as part of the Character Education program at Wacona School.

Community and parent involvement is also a major focus.  The school boasts a strong volunteer/mentoring program and receives monetary support from local businesses for support of special programs.
