Susan B. Anthony was born in Massachusetts in 1820.  She grew up in Massachusetts and belonged to the Quaker Church.  Fairness and peace were very important to the Quakers.  So Ms. Anthony grew up believing in fairness and peace.  Her family moved to New York when she was 25 years old.  Many people owned slaves during this time in America.  Ms. Anthony and her family were against slavery.  They tried to do something about slavery.  She talked to people and did what she could to make people turn against it.  Some people did not like it because she worked hard to do away with slavery.

Ms. Anthony was a teacher.  She was worried about the schools.  She wanted to do some things to help.  The men teachers got more pay than the lady teachers.  Boy students got a better education than girl students.

Women could not vote or own property.  Ms. Anthony worked and made speeches for women’s rights.  Sometimes people would not let her talk to groups because she was a woman.  Ms. Anthony had her own newspaper called The Revolution.  She wrote stuff in her newspaper about people’s problems.  She wanted every person to have the same rights.  She worked all her life for fairness and peace.
