Cesar Chavez was born in Yuma, Arizona in 1927. His father owned a farm and a grocery store. His family had a hard time. His dad had to sell the store and the farm. They moved to California. They had to work on other farms. They were so poor they had to sleep in their car. The workers had to work very hard. Children had to work too. They made just a little bit of money for all their hard work. Cesar knew something was wrong. He didn’t think it was right to get such a small amount of money for the long, hard work. He didn’t know what to do to make things better for the workers. He joined the Navy for three years. He still thought about the workers. When he got out, he tried to do something to help them. A man named Fred Ross helped Chavez with some ideas. Chavez made a plan to help them. He worked hard to get a law so the workers could have the same rights as others workers.
