     Eleanor Roosevelt was liked a lot and did many things to help the people of America.  She was born in 1884.  She had a very rich family.  She was a shy little girl.  Her father helped people who didn’t have much money.  Sometimes she would go with her father to help families.  She grew up helping others too.

     Mrs. Roosevelt’s parents died when she was young.  She had to live with her grandmother.  Her grandmother sent her away to boarding school when she was fifteen.  She was liked it a lot at the boarding school.  She enjoyed being there. 

     After she came back to the United States, she worked as a volunteer.  She didn’t get paid to help people.  She did it because she cared about people. She helped poor people.  She wanted to make things better for them.  Helping with women’s rights was important to Mrs. Roosevelt too.  She worked hard for civil rights for all Americans.

     She married Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1905.  They had six children.  Later he got sick with a disease called polio.  She took care of him.  He had trouble walking after he got polio.  Mrs. Roosevelt was a teacher and a writer too.  Her husband was elected president of the United States in 1932.

She quit teaching to help the President.
