     Lyndon Baines Johnson was the thirty-sixth President of the United States.  He became President on November 22, 1963.  He became President when President John F. Kennedy died in Dallas, Texas.  President Kennedy was shot in the car that he was riding in down a street in Dallas, Texas.  His wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, was sitting beside him in the car.  She was not hurt. 

     President Johnson was born on a farm in Texas in 1908.  He was a smart kid.  He liked English and history in school.  He liked to joke around in high school.  He was a farmer for a while.  Claudia “Lady Bird” Taylor and Lyndon B. Johnson got married in 1912.  They had two girls.  Mr. Johnson was a school teacher and a rancher.  Mr. Johnson was in World War II.  He earned a Silver Star Medal for being brave in the war. 

     Mr. Johnson wanted to do things to make our country better.  He wanted to help make things fair for all people.  He helped pass a civil rights bill when he was in the Senate.  When he became President, he signed the Civil Rights Act.  Civil rights are the rights that every American citizen has in this country.  President Johnson died in 1973.
