Lexington and Concord The American Colonies fought a war against Great Britain. Because it was the first revolution of modern times, the rest of the world looked at it with much interest. When the first shot was fired in Concord, Massachusetts it was heard around the world. At Lexington, neither side wanted to fight, but they both felt they were right and would not give in to the other. For some time they just looked at each other. After sometime a shot was fired by one of the sides nobody knows which side. It was the start of a long war. In Concord the two sides once again met each other. This time there were more people on both sides. The British were looking for supplies that the Patriots had hidden there. The Patriots had already moved the supplies to the woods outside of town. The two sides faced each other with only a bridge separating them. More shots were fired and this battle only lasted for a few minutes and the British troops retreated into town. Yorktown The French navy defeated the British Navy so they couldn't get soldiers and supplies to the British. General Cornwallis had to surrender to the Americans because his retreat was blocked off by the French Navy. George Washington had marched his troops from the north and Cornwallis had no choice but to surrender. This effectively ended the war. The colonies had won their independence. |
