One of the most damaging causes of the conflict between the American colonies and Great Britain was the disagreement over who had the right to tax the colonies. Parliament or the legislative bodies of the colonies. Parliament insisted that it had the right to do so. They did this because they felt like they were doing what was right for the entire empire and that no one part should complain about doing what was best for the entire country. This led to written clashes between the two sides. Taxes were passed on the colonist in spite of the fact that they had no representatives in Parliament. Parliament would pass a tax or law and the colonist would protest. The laws concerning taxes and the rights of the colonist as Englishmen drew the sharpest protest.
