Battles
Emancipation

Do you know any famous battles?  Well I am going to talk about four for you.  The four are: Battle of Antietam, The First Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Gettysburg, and The Battle of Vicksburg.

The first battle I am going to talk about is The First Battle of Bull Run.  Bull Run started in July 1861, and it took place in Manassas, Virginia.  This battle was unusual because crowds of people came to watch!  Some even packed and brought along picnic lunches. The South won this battle, and it was important because it gave the South confidence.

The battle that I am going to be talking about next is The Battle of Antietam.  This battle started on September 16-18, 1862.  It took place in Washington County.  This battle resulted in the highest casualties in one day of the whole war with troop losses numbering over 4,000. More than 10,000 soldiers were wounded.  The battle was really a draw, but it was important because it led to President Lincoln’s decision to issue an order to free the slaves in areas that were still fighting against the Union.

The next battle is the battle of Vicksburg.  This battle was important because it proved to be a key victory, and its location gave the North control of the Mississippi River, which cut the south into two parts. The western states of the Confederacy were no longer able to communicate easily with the states to the east or to supply many reinforcements to them.

The fourth battle I am going to talk about is Gettysburg.  The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1863, and it took place in Pennsylvania.  The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the deadliest battles of the Civil War. This Union victory marked a turning point in the war.  The loss of this battle caused General Lee’s Confederate troops to retreat into Virginia.
