General Lee: Fought for South, Born in Virginia on January19, 1807.He was important because he gave up and and tried to make peace. In his final battle he said "Men I have done my best for you; my heart is too full to say more".
Thomas Jackson: Side Southern, from Virginia. He was important because he helped win the first battle of Bullrun. A northern general said to his troops "look at Jackson stand like a stonewall". Ulysses S. Grant: Side northern, born in Ohio. Ulysses S. Grant was important because he gave the Union a chance to win the war. They finally had a general as effective as Robert E. Lee. Grant's accomplishments in the Civil War are the battle of Vicksburg.
William T. Sherman: Fought for North, born in Ohio. His role in the Civil War was William's march to sea. He marched from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia burning and destroying everything. Abraham Lincoln: Was a very important person. One thing he did during the Civil War was making the Emancipation Proclamation. He insisted that his first purpose of the war was to save the Union not to free slavery. He also gave the Gettysburg Address talking about all the casualties during the Gettysburg Battle. Lincoln was a very important person. Harriet Tubman: Was born a slave on the eastern shore of Maryland. Heard her master's land would be sold so she escaped to Pennsylvania. She wanted to help others. She traveled to Baltimore to free her sister and two children. She made at least fifteen trips to the South and freed at least two hundred people. She planned for food, clothing, train tickets, and forged passes. Her reputation was known well. Harriet Tubman supported the war as a nurse. She was often compared to Moses who led the Israelites to freedom. She assisted the sick, elderly and disabled. The overnight stops on a slave’s route to freedom were often called the Underground Railroad. She never lost a passenger and on at least one occasion she threatened to shoot a passenger who had second thoughts about going back.
