V-E Day

V-E Day occurred on May 8, 1945 after the efforts from all the men of the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada. The allied forces invaded Normandy, and began to drive the Nazis out of France. At the same time the Soviets were throwing their own counter-offensive attack. The Soviets drove the World Powers out of Europe. Grabbing their advantage, the Soviets then gathered up to and went to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Romania. By 1945, the German armies defenses had began to collapse. The Soviets army filled the eastern part of Germany nearly one-third. Then the allied powers surrounded Berlin. On April 30th, 1945 Adolf Hitler committed suicide and his army surrendered very soon after his death.

General Douglas MacArthur is responsible for the “island hopping strategy”
which led to the invasion of the Philippines in 1944. The battle at Leyte
Gulf destroyed the Japanese navy. It also resulted in more assaults. Iwo
Jima and Okinawa were captured in March and June of 1945, after months of fighting. This success led to the direct bombing of Japan. The war with
Japan ended quickly after the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, 1945. Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945.
