Folk tales are stories that are usually told by one person to another. They are passed down from one generation to another. That means that a grandfather might tell his grandchild a story. When the grandchild has children, he will tell them, and so on. Sooner or later, someone might write down the story, and it is a folk tale.

Usually folk tales come from one country. Japan has its own folk tales. Russia has its own folk tales. Africa has its own.

A folk tale from the United States is the story about Rip Van Winkle. Another folk tale is the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Our favorite folk tale is the story of Johnny Appleseed.
