Heat makes things expand. That means they get bigger. When an ice cube melts, the water takes up a little more room than the ice cube did.

Heat affects things. That means it makes things change.

When heat transfers from one thing to another, it makes one thing warmer, and it makes the other thing cooler.

When heat transfers from a fire to an ice cube, the fire gets cooler. The ice cube melts and turns into water. That is an effect of heat.

When you put on a jacket, your body gets warmer because the heat is trapped inside the jacket. The jacket is an insulator, and the effect is that you get warmer.

When you make Jell-O or pudding, you put the liquid into the refrigerator. It gets colder because there isn't much heat in the refrigerator. That is an effect of heat, too, because the heat moves out of the Jell-O or pudding.

Everything is affected by heat in some way.
