Energy can move inside one thing. It can also move from one thing to another. If you touch something hot, energy moves to your hand and makes it warmer. If you touch something cold, energy from your hand moves to the cold thing, making it warmer.

You can make energy by rubbing things together. This is called friction. You can make energy by burning. You can also make energy by mixing things together. All of these ways will produce heat.

Heat is energy that moves from one thing to another. The sun creates heat because energy moves from the sun to the earth. Fires make heat because they move energy from the flames to other things.

Almost all of the heat we have comes from the sun in some way. The sun makes trees grow, and we burn those trees for warmth.

There are other ways to make heat. Rub your hands together really fast. Can you feel them getting warmer? This kind of heat is called friction.
