Clothes

What did the Indians wear?

Most of the Indians in both groups wore clothing made of animal skins. The women wore dresses, and the men wore pants or breechcloths, which were kind of like swim trunks.

The women would sew feather together into capes. The men also liked to paint their chests and faces for decoration.

They wore special clothes on special occasions. Certain dresses were worn for dances, and other things were worn during wars.

They made their own clothes. They used animal skins for fabric. Sometimes they used leaves and bark. They used bones as needles, and other animal parts as thread.

The Plains Indians also made and wore war bonnets. These were big headdresses made out of colorful feathers. They would wear these when they were fighting someone. Usually the chiefs or important Indians wore them.

Think about it: Imagine that you are a Native American child who lived long ago. How would you get new clothes? What would the clothes be made of? How would they be sewn together? Are the like clothes that children wear today? How are they different?
