Travel

How did the Indians travel?

Most of the woodlands Indians traveled by foot. They walked everywhere, and they carried things on their backs. Some of them had horses. The fastest way to travel was by canoe in the water.

A canoe was made by taking a log and hollowing it out. That means they took out the inside part, so all that was left was the outside, like a shell. Then they softened the wood with water and hot rocks. After that, they could make the wood stretch a little so the boat was wider. Then they let it dry, and attached pieces for a bow and stern (front and back). Then they decorated it!

The Plains Indians also traveled by foot, but more of them had horses. They traded with people to buy horses. Even the children learned how to ride horses when they were still very young. They called their horses "Spirit Dogs" or "Medicine Dogs". During war, they would paint their horses just like they painted themselves. They also used canoes to travel by water.

Think about it:  How could the Indians walk through woods without making much sound? What were their shoes made of? How did they get shoes? Why would they want to be able to walk quietly?
