John F. Kennedy was the second son of Joseph P. Kennedy who served as ambassador to Great Britain during the administration of Franklin Roosevelt. In 1940, he graduated Harvard University. He joined the navy the next year. In August, 1943, as a commander of the U.S. Navy torpedo boat PT-109, he was forced to save some of his crew when his boat was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. Although he was injured, he helped save some of his crew. Because of his bravery, he was given the Navy and Marine Corps medal. When he came back from the war, entered into politics in 1946.
After the war he became a Democratic Congressman for the Boston area. In 1953, he went to the Senate. He was married in 1953.While he was getting better from back surgery, he wrote a book. He won the Pulitzer Prize for the book he wrote.
In 1956, he almost won the nomination for Democratic Vice President and four years later he was the nominee for president. Winning by a narrow margin over Richard Nixon by taking over the popular vote John F. Kennedy became the first Roman Catholic President. |
