John F. Kennedy was became in as President of the United States on January 20,1961. He faced his first serious emergency just four months after being inaugurated. Fidel Castro, a guerrilla leader had taken over the Batista dictatorship and made himself leader of Cuba. Castro moved to a communist dictatorship and was receiving help from the Soviet Union. J.F.K. allowed a plan that Eisenhower had made to bring down the Cuban dictator, but it failed. This event was named the Bay of Pigs. This hurt the U.S.’s likeness overseas, but especially with the Soviet Union.
After the Bay of Pigs, Nikita Khrushchev authorized the building of Soviet missile bases in Cuba. This threatened the United States with a nuclear attack. J.F.K. demanded that the Soviets remove all nuclear weapons in Cuba. This began the Cuban Missile Crisis.
During his presidency, J.F.K. started the Peace Corps. This program allows Americans to volunteer where help is needed. They can help in education, farming, health care, and construction. He was also interested in the exploration of space. He asked Congress to approve funding for the “Project Apollo” with a goal of landing an American man on the moon. He went on television and asked Americans to end racism.
On November 22,1963 President Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas.
