Cave picture by Kimily Metamorphic rocks could be igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks that have been changed by heat and pressure. The classifications of metamorphic rocks include: Slaty: It is smooth and splits along planes (like a stack of paper) Schistose: It is smooth and has bands, and splits easily. Gneissose: Coarse with large grains, and foliated. Granoblastic: Large crystalline grains that are grown together Hornfels: Small grains, shatters into sharp fragments Banded: Has bands of minerals, similar to Foliated. Science Fun: To understand how metamorphic rocks are formed, take a few pieces of modeling clay and roll them into small balls. Freeze them. Then take them out of the freezer and put them on a table (cover the table with newspaper). Set a brick on top of the little balls. Watch as the balls of clay heat up and thaw out. Write down what happens to them. Do you see them change and undergo a metamorphosis? What caused this change?
