By: Kricket After a few short weeks of the stock market crash, the U.S. entered into the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a big economic hardship on America. The stock market crash was only one of the reasons for the Great Depression. As the economy worsened people had to stop spending money. Since people stop spending money, companies did not have to make as many products. This led to more people without a job. The schools tried to save money by cutting teacher’s pay. Some schools even closed. Many children quit going to school so that they could help their family earn money. Charity groups and the local governments had a hard time trying to help people in great need. Despite President Hoover’s efforts many people blamed him for the continuing of the depression. The newspapers that homeless people used were called Hoover blankets. President Herbert Hoover believed that the economy would soon improve with little help from the government. When the time came for Hoover to be re-elected in 1932, a lot of voters wanted a change. The Democrats nominated the New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. When Roosevelt won the election many people hoped to fulfill his promise he had made to help all the people in need. |
