By Deobra The first commercial radio station in the United States KDKA began broadcasting in Pittsburgh in 1922. Some people said that the first broadcast was on Nov.2, 1922 from the top of an office building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The radio people were playing jazz. Jazz was truly the first American form of music. Louis Armstrong was a trumpeter who played the first jazz music that was heard north of Mason-Dixon line. In the 1920’s while African- American female vocalists were known as the “classic blues” recording, and often but not always the males were jazz instrumentalists. New pianists included Dolly Adams, Emma Barrett, Lil Hardin Armstrong and Lovie Austin. In addition, horn players launched careers, including mother and daughter Dyer and Dolly Jones. The two frequently played instruments other than the piano in the 1920s.
