The soldiers of World War I were lucky to have many new weapons to fight the war. These new weapons changed the way the soldiers could fight the war. One new type of weapon developed during World War 1 was poisonous gas. The gas would burn the other soldiers eyes and lungs. Before long, both sides were using gas to fight in the war. Soon, gas masks were developed to protect soldiers from the poisonous gas. Another new weapon used to fight World War 1 was the airplane. World War 1 was the first war to use the airplane. The airplanes carried bombs that were dropped on targets. They also carried machine guns the soldiers could use to shoot at other planes or soldiers on the ground. On September 15, 1916, the British introduced tanks for the first time. The tanks carried soldiers with guns inside of them. The tanks could carry the soldiers close to the enemies’ line and allow the soldiers to shoot their guns from inside the tank. The tanks could also crash through barricades and trenches. The most important weapon used for the first time in war was the machine gun. The machine gun was invented by Hiram Maxim. The machine gun fired shots faster than the rifles soldiers had been using. This weapon caused a tremendous amount of deaths during the war.
