Dr. Turner asked the School Council to join her in a moment of silence.

Mr. Bagley presented the agenda to the committee and official school business was conducted.

Mrs. Roberts read the minutes from the last meeting (December 8, 2009). A motion was offered to accept the minutes. Mr. Lanier seconded the motion.

All Ware County schools have been asked to design a brochure to share with the public. A brochure for Wacona was designed by Mr. Chancey. The brochure was approved by the School Council.

Plans for the Campus Beautification Project were discussed. The date of February 27, 2010, was finalized at the December meeting. Items on the list for the beautification event include retrieving Wacona’s benches from the BOE and securing them in the ground in front of Wacona. Mr. Lanier commented that potholes in the front of the school continue to grow larger and need to be filled. Mr. Lanier suggested checking with Dixie Concrete. Mr. Bagley suggested checking with Littlefield Co. as well and compare prices.

Traffic in front of the school continues to be a concern. Mr. Bagley suggested placing cones in areas off limits to parking. Parents are parking in non-designated areas presenting a safety hazard. The need of a parking lot in front of the school was revisited by Dr. Turner. A parent representative will present the matter to the BOE during the March meeting. A suggestion was made that speed bumps could be placed in front of the school. Concern is for safety of children. Mr. Bagley made a request that Rochelle Varnadore would address the BOE in regard to the parking lot request. If for some reason she was not available, he volunteered to get on the agenda and meet with the BOE.

Morning tutoring with Study Island was discussed by Dr. Turner. She explained the computer program and commented that the students are already utilizing it. We have a larger number of students receiving tutoring in the morning than in the afternoon. Study Island can be used at school and home. Study Island is available for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade tutoring students. Morning sessions are held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 7:00 until 7:30. Students go to breakfast at 7:30. Afternoon sessions are held Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30 until 4:30.

Parent Compact revision was addressed. It has been on the Wacona website for a few weeks for parents to review. Parents did not see a need for revising the current Parent Compact.

An update on the Parent Resource room was presented. Wacona has a parent volunteer here to assist parents from 10:00 until 2:00 weekly.

Title 1 Parent Involvement meeting will be held April 29, 2010 in Lenox, Georgia. The time is 8:30 until 2:30. Dr. Turner, Michele Yaun, and a parent representative (to be named at a later date) will attend.

Title 1 Parent Survey is open for revisions for improvement if necessary. It is also available for viewing on the Wacona website.

Nominations for the Business/Parent Representative and the Parent Representative for 2010-2011 are requested. Names of the nominees will be brought to the next meeting. Nominations are open until the next School Council meeting.
