In addition to charts and maps, scientists record a lot of data to understand the weather patterns better.

One type of data they collect is temperatures. They record how hot it is every day, and how cool it gets. They record how much rain falls every day. They record wind speeds. They record different types of precipitation (rain or snow or sleet). They record everything they can about weather, because this helps them figure out what will happen next.

Want to have some fun? Record your own weather data for your city. Check your records against the data from last year (you can find it online). See if it matches. Was this day hotter than this day last year? Did you get more rain this month than you did in the same month last year?

Knowing the weather patterns helps keep us informed.
