Birds today were really cool to learn about.   I read a lot of neat stuff when I did my research. Birds are warm blooded vertebrate animals that have wings, feathers, a beak, no teeth, strong, hollow bones, a skeleton in which many bones are put together or are absent, powerful flight muscles, and an extremely efficient, one way breathing system. Most birds can fly. Birds have a very strong heart and an efficient way of breathing these are necessary for birds to fly. Birds also use a bunch of energy while flying and need to eat a bunch of food to power their flight. Not all flying animals are birds and not all birds can fly.  Most can fly. Some can run,  some swim, and some do mixtures of these.

Scientists learned from fossils that ancient birds were very different than our birds, today.  Just like fish, birds don't make very good fossils.  Their bones are too fragile. The Archaeopteryx lithographica is the oldest know fossil.  It looked more like a dinosaur than a bird.  Unlike our birds, today, it had sharp teeth, a flat breastbone,a long bony tail, and  three claws on the wing.  The only thing the same is the feathers, the wishbone, and reduced fingers.
