Fossils are dead animals or plants. Fossils are dug
under dirt. A fossil has no bones in it.
Fossil means “dug up.” Most fossils have to be dug
up from the ground and are formed when they are buried by layers of
rocks and sand. If a bone is trapped in the rocks or sand it becomes a
fossil. A fossil will have the color of the material that surrounds it.
Most fossils are made from ordinary rock. However they are made of the
material that encases it.

Fossils happen over time when minerals replace the
bone. Fossils also must be protected from the elements in order for
this to happen. This usually happens quickly after the plant or animal
is buried. Fossils are found all over the world.
Fossils look and feel like rocks. They are copies
of the original bones or other material.
Fossils are very old. Some are 10,000 years old.
Some are 500,000,000 years old.
You can find fossils underwater, in the mountains,
on beaches, or in the desert.
