Butterflies lay eggs. The eggs hatch into baby caterpillars called larva. They are small.

They eat a lot and grow. They attach themselves to twigs. They grow shells that are hard. These shells protect them.

Now they are called pupa or chrysalis. Pupas are usually the same color as leaves and twigs.. This helps protect them from animals that would eat them.

The caterpillar lives inside the pupa. It grows and changes into a butterfly.

After a while the pupa opens and a butterfly comes out. It is an adult now.
