Invertebrates are animals, though we usually don't think of them as animals. They are animals without backbones.

Some types of invertebrates are:

  • Insects
  • Crustaceans (like crabs and lobsters)
  • Arthropods (like crabs and spiders)
  • Mollusks (like an octopus)
  • Echinoderms (like starfish)
  • Protozoa
  • Arachnids (like spiders)
  • Annelids (like earthworms)
  • Coelenterates (like jellyfish)

Did you know that 98% of all animals are invertebrates?

Some invertebrates have outside shells, like starfish and mollusks and crabs.

Invertebrates are cold-blooded.

Most invertebrates are smaller than vertebrates.

Several invertebrates have more than two legs. Their bodies can have more than one part.

Some invertebrates have no legs at all. They also do not have any eyes.

Insects are the largest group of invertebrates.
