| All living things are divided into five groups. These groups are
called kingdoms. The five kingdoms are:
Animals, plants,
protists, fungi, and
monerans or bacteria. Be sure to click on
each link to learn more about each kingdom. There is a special way
to classify living things. This classification is called taxonomy. A
man named Carolus Linnaeus created the classification system we use.
Living things are grouped or classified according to things they
have in common, or ways that they are similar. For example, mammals
all have hair and produce milk for their babies. Scientists use sets
of rules to help them classify living things.
Each kingdom has different characteristics. Some of them make
their own food, while others don't. Some of them lay eggs, while
others have live babies. Some of them produce seeds, while others
can't live without the other kingdoms.
