Word Processing

Word processing is just one application
that you can do on a computer if you have
the right software.  Some examples of
word processing programs are Microsoft Word,
Corel WordPerfect, Notepad, Wordpad,
and Student Writing Center.

Changing fonts and settings in these
programs is very similar.  Below are some
directions for changing these settings in Word.
If you don't have Word on your computer,
click on "start" and "programs" and "accessories"
and see if you have notepad or wordpad.
To change settings in Notepad or Wordpad,
the directions below will be helpful, but
you might have to hit slightly
different keys or buttons.

Fonts and Page Settings in Word

Click on the arrow beside the current font setting.
Scroll up or down and view the styles.  Choose one you like and click on it.

Size:
Click on the arrow beside the current size setting.
Scroll up or down and choose a size you want, then click on it.
The larger the number, the bigger the font will be.

Click on the B again to turn it off.
(or hit Control and B on your keyboard)

To center words, click on the picture
that shows all the words centered.

To make words flush right, click on the picture
that shows all words even with the right margin.

To justify, click on the picture that
shows the words touching both margins.
The program will automatically adjust your words to fit the margins.
Newspapers use justified type most of the time.

Color:  Click on the arrow next to the A that has color under it.
This will bring up a color choice scheme.
Just click on the color you want to use.

Margins:  Click on “File” then on “Page Setup.”
Make sure the “Margins” tab is chosen.
The margins are set by inches.
Adjust the top, bottom, left, and right margins as needed.
Usually you will want 1" (or one inch) margins.
Look at the picture in the preview box to see how it will look.
Then click “OK.”

Line Spacing:  To set your lines on single spacing,
click on the word “Format,” then click on “Paragraph.”
Find the words “Line spacing.”
Click on it and choose the one you wish.
Single spacing puts your lines next to each other.
Double spacing makes blank lines between your lines of text.
After you choose your setting, click “OK.”

To copy words, highlight the text you want to copy.
Then right click on your mouse and choose "copy."
Or choose the copy option on the toolbar at the top of your screen.

Then right click on your mouse and choose "cut."
Or choose the cut option (a pair of scissors) on the toolbar
at the top of your screen.
Or simply press your Delete key on your keyboard.

To paste words, put the cursor where you want
the text to be inserted, then right click and choose "paste"
or choose the paste (a clipboard) on the toolbar
at the top of your screen.
